The M HKA, in partnership with Antwerp Pride, is organising the exhibition TOGETHER. Featuring the work Not Proud Yet [I – III].
The exhibition runs from 6 August to 6 September. We invite several artists, including Carla Arocha & Stéphane Schraenen, Marijke De Roover, Philip Huyghe and Stef Van Looveren, to work together in a bubble of their own on themes that strengthen the LGBTQIA+ community, and create an inclusive exhibition. The invited artists such as Jack Davey, Kasper Bosmans, Jacolby Satterwhite, Cindy Sherman, Nan Goldin and Megan-Leigh Heilig aim to use their visual language to shape an environment that celebrates diversity as a quality that brings exciting and challenging ideas to the world we all live in.
Not Proud Yet [I – III]
These appealingly grotesque mouldy remains of tea form a fragmented story of Section 28: An act that made it illegal for local governments in the United Kingdom to ‘promote homosexuality’. It was incited in 1987 and only fully abolished in 2005. This was the first anti-gay law created in the UK in 100 years, galvanized out of moral panic that affected a whole generation access to education and support. What is the embodied experience of state sanctioned homophobia? What are the new fears of moral corruption and new acts of political silencing?
